Our History

The Metamora Carriage and Driving Association was founded in 1974 by Mrs. William Kennedy and Mrs. James Blackwood as an informal association dedicated to the pursuit of carriage driving. Learning to drive properly and safely was a principal goal of the association.

Clinics and educational films were scheduled in addition to social gatherings and an annual dinner meeting. The first clinic in the summer of 1975, at which Tom Ryder was the clinician, was held at Win-A-Gin Farm and the Metamora Club. Over the years clinicians have included Evelyn and Victor Shone, John Greenall, Bill Lower, Bill Long, Craig and Joanne Kellogg: Udo Hochgeschurz, Barry Dickinson, Sem Groenewoud, Lisa Singer and Larry Poulin.

Spring and fall driving picnics became a natural forum to practice new driving skills, enjoy the country side and socialize with fellow drivers. A Fun Day was an early addition to the calendar. It offered another casual outing with the added element of low-key competitive games.

In 1982 the first informal Combined Driving Event was held on the Kennedy’s Windrise Farm. The first full event recognized by the American Driving Society took place in 1985. The Metamora Combined Driving Event has become nationally known and has been selected for American Driving Society clinics for Judges and Officials.

In recent years a Sporting Day of Traditional Driving has been added to the calendar. In 2007 The Metamora Carriage and Driving Association will host its inaugural ADS recognized Pleasure Driving Show, to be held at Audrey and Irving Rose’s Squeaky Windmill Farm.

MCDA adopted by-laws in 1990 and became incorporated in 1994. The stated purpose of the Association is to promote the sport of carriage driving for pleasure and competition in the spirit of sportsmanship, the pursuit of knowledge of the sport, and safety for all concerned, both animals and people.

MCDA is governed by a Board of nine elected by the membership. The official newsletter of the organization is Carriage Tracks, published bi-monthly.

Standing committees consist of Nominating, Combined Driving, Membership, Safety, Program/Social, and Pleasure Driving.

Four membership classifications are available: Individual Life, Individual, Family, and Honorary. The 2008 membership is approximately 102. Included among the members are accomplished drivers, novices, and those who just enjoy the activities and friendship.
