Turkish Airlines is more powerful than ever and is a member of the Star Alliance group. They operate 130 international flight routes and 41 domestic routes, making a total of 171 destinations they fly to. Flying out of their primary base at Ataturk International Airport, their ports of call span the globe from Europe to Africa, Asia and North and South America. They have seen a steady rise in revenue as well as number of passengers over the past four years. In 2006, they flew a total of 17 million passengers with a total of 2.2 billion USD. The company made approximately 4 billion USD in 2009, with more than 25 million passengers using the airline, making it a terrific year for them.

Turkish Airlines was awarded the “Market Leadership Award” 2011 by ‘Air Transport World’, a leading magazine within the aviation industry. The award was presented at a celebration in Washington D.C. and is considered an internationally recognized level of accomplishment.
The last few years of economic difficulties has proved to be a very challenging business environment for many companies globally. However, the strong marketing efforts and innovative management of Turkish Airlines saw them ride through the worst of the global financial crisis and still turn a strong profit. Yet, one more US flight gateway was put on Turkish Airlines’ list in June, 2010. This is the most recent expansion which brings the number of gateways that start in the US to three, which also includes nonstop travel from Washington DC to Instanbul, Turkey. There will be four flights starting in Dulles International Airport. The Airbus A330 will be the selected airliner. This move means that Turkey is constantly trying to find ways to give Americans the opportunity to see Turkey and all of its beauty. Truly, Istanbul can be considered a unique blend of a modern cosmopolitan city and ancient, old world history. Also, a fourth United States gateway is on the map for March 2011, which will start in Los Angeles CA and go to Istanbul.
